Who Might Get the First Crack at James Toney in the UFC?

Mike Chiappettaby Mike Chiappetta

In processing the news of James Toney signing with the UFC, the mind quickly shifts to who Toney will face in his maiden voyage in the octagon. While Dana White had no information on a date or opponent to give MMA Fighting while confirming his signing, it’s always fun to speculate on who it could be.

There is a set of assumptions we can make about a prospective opponent. First, rather than risk a promising young fighter losing to Toney and losing momentum, it’s safe to assume the UFC will try to match him with a veteran. So guys like Cain Velasquez and Todd Duffee are probably out. Second, the promotion will pair him with a name fighter. At 41 years old, Toney’s days in MMA are limited, and the UFC knows they need to cash in immediately. Third, Toney won’t get a gimme in his first time out; he wants a big payday, and he knows there are only a few opponents who will bring it. Finally, weight class doesn’t matter. I have a feeling Toney’s first time out may well be a catch weight.

Ken Shamrock took a loss in the legal system from his former employer when a judge ruled against the MMA legend in his contract squabble with the Las Vegas-based UFC.

In a suit filed in April 2008 in Nevada’s Eighth Judicial District Court, Shamrock claimed the company violated contract provisions of his deal and, according to the UFC demanded “hundreds of thousands of dollars” in compensation he claimed he was owed as a result.

The court, however, ruled in a 16-page decision that the contract was not breached.

Chuck Liddell ‘Strong and Healthy’ Preparing for Tito Ortiz

Michael David Smithby Michael David Smith

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — When former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell lost to Shogun Rua at UFC 97 in April of 2009, it was supposed to be the end of his career.

At least, that’s what UFC President Dana White said at the time. But Liddell never wanted the loss to Shogun to be his last time inside the Octagon, and we now know that it won’t be: Liddell will square off with Tito Ortiz for a third time this year, most likely at UFC 115 in June. And in a conversation with MMAFighting.com during Super Bowl week, Liddell said he can’t wait to get back into the Octagon.

Win or Lose, Mark Coleman Rededicated to MMA Career

Mike Chiappettaby Mike Chiappetta

When he was forced to pull out of a Nov. 2009 matchup with Tito Ortiz with an injury, Mark Coleman figured that he was essentially throwing away the last golden opportunity of his storied mixed martial arts career.

“I didn’t foresee being able to top that matchup and I anticipated fighting younger guys, maybe being a gatekeeper,” he said recently.

But trading in one legend for another, Coleman got a reprieve when the UFC offered him a chance to face off against the multi-time champion Randy Couture. And win or lose at Saturday’s UFC 109 main event, the 45-year-old “Hammer” says he’s not yet thinking about hanging up his gloves.
