Forrest Griffin: My Jiu Jitsu Is As Good as Nogueira’s

Michael David Smithby Michael David Smith

The Nogueira brothers are widely regarded as two of the best Brazilian jiu jitsu practitioners in mixed martial arts. But as Forrest Griffin prepares to fight Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC 114 on May 29, he says he thinks his jiu jitsu is just as good as Nogueira’s — and that he actually wants to take the fight to the ground.

Is UFC 110 a Must-Win Match for Keith Jardine?

Mike Chiappettaby Mike Chiappetta

He’s been a UFC staple since he first joined the company during season two of The Ultimate Fighter. He has wins over two former light-heavyweight champions — Forrest Griffin and Chuck Liddell — on his resume. But heading into his UFC 110 matchup with Ryan Bader, it’s easy to wonder about Keith Jardine’s standing in the UFC.

Jardine (15-6-1) has lost three of his last four bouts and won only twice since the start of 2007, with both of those victories coming via split decisions.

Dana White Says Anderson Silva Will Still Fight at UFC 112

Anderson SilvaThough an injury will keep Vitor Belfort from competing during the UFC’s maiden voyage to Abu Dhabi, middleweight champion Anderson Silva is still expected to fight at UFC 112, UFC President Dana White told MMA Fighting early Friday morning.

Belfort injured his shoulder in training and will require surgery.

White gave no indication as to who Silva might face, but said the fight will be in the middleweight division, indicating that “the Spider” will indeed defend his belt. At last Saturday’s UFC 109, Chael Sonnen soundly defeated Nate Marquardt and was promised a title shot after Belfort and Silva squared off. Now, with Belfort out, Sonnen seems the most likely possibility, but no sure thing.

After Randy Couture beat Mark Coleman at UFC 109, UFC President Dana White said Couture is one of the top five or six light heavyweights in the world.

But while Couture looked good against Coleman, he’s going to have to win at least one more fight at light heavyweight before he makes my Top 10. The updated rankings of the Top 10 light heavyweights in MMA are below.

Forrest Griffin is enjoying life following his unanimous decision victory over Tito Ortiz at UFC 106 in November. MMA Fighting caught up with the former 205-pound champion this weekend at UFC 108 in Las Vegas to talk about his performance, why he felt the need to apologize to Anderson Silva for his post-UFC 101 reaction and what’s next for him.

Oh, he also made fun of us quite a bit, but we’ll chalk that up to Forrest being Forrest. Check out the video interview below.

Rashad Evans’ Return to Wrestling Roots Good Long-Term Move For Success

Mike Chiappettaby Mike Chiappetta

Perhaps it wasn’t the dominant statement he hoped to make, but Rashad Evans managed a UFC 108 win over Thiago Silva in a mature performance featuring a varied game plan that is important for the major dividends it can pay down the road.

Evans returned to his wrestling roots and controlled Silva for most of the opening two rounds, connecting on seven of 11 takedown tries in putting the explosive Brazilian striker in a place he didn’t want to be: on his back.

That might not seem like a major shock; Evans first came to prominence as a guy who was almost exclusively a wrestler. But over time, he has become largely reliant on the standup game. In his three fights prior to facing off with Silva, he had tried just one takedown in nearly 30 minutes of action.
