Taking Your Game to the Next Level – Nomad

I wanted to start the New Year off by talking about how Strength, Conditioning, and Nutrition play a vital role in mixed martial arts (MMA). Often times we see fighters, both amateur and pro; run out of energy in the cage. Good energy levels from bell to bell play an important role when it comes to whose hand is raised at the end of the fight. I’m sure many of you have seen a fighter come out for Round One with high energy, however; by Round Two or Three become sluggish and unable to defend themselves and ultimately loose the fight.

Fighters must find the right balance in their training and in their fight. Fighters should understand that strength, conditioning, and nutrition are also part of a successful game.

Joel Jamieson, founder of 8weeksout.com, is one of MMA’s top Strength & Conditioning Coaches and pioneers and is widely regarded as the nation’s leading expert in the science of physical conditioning for MMA. His no nonsense scientific approach and Precision Conditioning training system is helping to revolutionize how today’s top fighters get in shape and has been instrumental in the success of more than 20 of the world’s best fighters from the UFC, Dream, WEC, Shooto, K-1, PrideFC, and other major organizations.

In one of Joel’s articles titled “Ultimate Fight Conditioning – Push the Pace” he writes “regardless of a fighter’s weight class, every cell in their body needs a constant supply of energy to function. This includes the cells within muscle fibers, of course, and they need energy in order to do their job of contracting and producing the force it takes to throw strikes, go for and defend takedowns, attempt a submission, etc.”

He goes on to say “Dynamic sports like MMA that require an athlete to produce a ton of energy to support high levels of muscle force and power for up to 15-25 minutes no doubt rely on both aerobic and anaerobic energy production – there is simply no way that either system alone is capable of producing enough energy by itself. This fact is generally well known and accepted, but what’s often misunderstood, however, is just how important the balance between these two energy systems really is.”

He then breaks it down to three major components, developing your cardiovascular system to deliver as much oxygen to the working muscles as possible, training the muscles to become more efficient at using the oxygen that your cardiovascular system is able to deliver and finally incorporating a training method called pace work. For combat sports, this type of work should take the form of sparring or pad/work and the general guideline is simply to deliberately train at the maximum pace you can sustain without any real measure of fatigue.

Right here in Texas we have great strength, conditioning, and nutrition personal trainers who are making a difference for Texas fighters. The Muscle Factory, of San Antonio, is one of those training facilities. Roland Gonzalez, Owner and Head Trainer, of the Muscle Factory has been helping amateur and pro MMA fighters for years. Roland will tell you that “we are not here to replace the importance of stand-up, wrestling, or jiu jitsu, we are here to supplement it.”

Roland continues “We can help improve a fighter’s game by first improving their cardio and muscle endurance by incorporating a variety of exercise regiments that fit the fighter’s needs and lifestyle. Secondly, we would start a diet plan that would help with strength and muscle recovery that will help maintain fighter energy.”

“The only real way to make lasting changes, regardless of your goals, is to use a holistic (meaning whole body) strategy. Every muscle group, including the heart the lungs, nutrition and diet, and positive mental wellness all have to be included in your overall program.”

While at the Muscle Factory I was able to watch Roland put Ray “The Judge” Rodriguez, a pro mma fighter out of San Antonio, though one of his two hour work out. Wow….it was high paced! I was impressed with Roland’s personal attention to detail and motivation during Ray’s work out.

After his workout, Ray told me “Training at the Muscle Factory has made me a complete fighter. My size, strength, stamina, and speed have all improved greatly.” Ray also said “Roland Gonzalez is amazing at what he does, and is one of the most genuine people I have ever met in my life. He’s been at every weigh in and been able to help me put back on 15 to 20 pounds before my fight time.”

As a Martial Artist I am a big advocate of Fight Seminar training. There are many reasons that attending seminars and workshops will help you quickly develop your training as a Martial Artist. You would be amazed how many instructors discourage you from attending seminars, while others will only encourage you to attend ones at your school or from your discipline. Seminar training can be beneficial to strengthen your training within your discipline as well as add new elements to your game. Here are the reasons I feel that Seminars are essential for an aspiring Mixed Martial Artist.

Community College of MMA Training

Whether or not you have ever been to community college, you will most likely understand the concept of it. Community College is a way for you to test the waters and try different classes to figure out what you like the most. It’s a smorgesh board of different curriculum options if you will. Martial Arts Seminars are the same way. In particularly, if you train in one style, you may not have the opportunity to train in different arts and see if there is something about that style that you like or could add to your development. For example, if you train at a Karate school, you may not do much boxing, or if you train at a Muay Thai school, you may do much grappling. Training in seminars will give you the opportunity to test the waters with different styles without having to make a major commitment.

Learn New Skills

Many times the instructors who are hosting the seminar are certified under the person giving the seminar. For example, if your instructor runs a Combat Submission Wrestling school, then he or she is certified under Erik Paulson. Assuming the seminar is given by Erik Paulson, he will usually use that as an opportunity to pass along more new techniques or curriculum to your instructor and his/her student body, as well as refine current techniques and skills being practiced. If you are taking the seminar at the school that train at, you will be learning the same tricks, tips and techniques as everyone else. However, if you are going outside of your school, most likely you will be bringing new techniques back to your current school or training location. You can use this as an opportunity to pass along your newfound knowledge, or surprise your friends with the techniques during sparring sessions, which is what I like to do.

Barometer

Judging how you are advancing in your training is sometimes difficult. Many times when you join up at a school, you can never really judge how good you are getting. The reason is that everyone at your school is usually continuing to advance at the same time you are. As new people come in, you recognize you are better at certain skills than they are, but you usually dismiss it at “well, they are a noobie”. Going to seminars is a good way to evaluate your skill. You can evaluate how quickly you are able to pick up new techniques and skills. Also, many times not everyone attending the seminar is from the place where you train. Because of that you see how you compare to other from different places. Seminars are one of the best ways to evaluate your skills aside from competition.

Social Networking

No I am not talking about Twitter or Facebook or Myspace or whatever other Social Networking craze takes place in the future. I am talking about real life social networking. Going to seminars is a great way to contact and meet like minded people from all over the world. I have met and made friends in places like Florida, Texas, New Jersey, Delaware, Austrailia, England and more. It’s great because as I travel, I find that I usually have a place to train at. This is even more of a reason why I suggest you don’t just look for seminars in your area, but that you expand yourself and travel to different areas for your seminar training. I have taken seminars in Connetticut, Georgia, Las Vegas and of course Thailand. Get out of your bubble and meet some new people. You will tank me later.

Rejuvenation

Many times with my training I start to hit a rut. It’s usually around that time where I decide to head out for a seminar. After a seminar or some other training excursion I usually feel completely rejuvenated and refocused on my training. Sometimes it’s as simple as having someone point out the basics and fundementals again. Other times, it’s the feeling of learning something new which inspires you to be refocused. Either way, without fail whenever I come back from a seminar or camp training I always feel reinspired about my training. If you are starting to feel that your training is becoming dull and boring, you don’t need to look for another place to train, just search out a seminar and trust me you will come back refreshed and full of life.

Open Casting Call to be Held for Combat Sports Athletes in Myrtle Beach for Reality Show [Press Release]

Myrtle Beach, SC – Global Proving Ground (GPG), a new revolutionary platform that enables combat sports athletes to showcase their skills on a global level, announced today that additional casting calls will be held both in the U.S. and abroad for the GPG related reality show project. All experienced fighters with a combat sports background are welcome. The next open casting call will take place in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on July 26, at Carolina Forest Martial Arts.

The first open casting call for this exciting reality show project, hosted by the MMA & Sports Expo ‘Show of Strength’ in Atlantic City, exceeded the creator’s expectations. The casting call drew many elite fighters from a variety of martial arts backgrounds. Hollywood producer/director Ben Perry, who has worked with many A-list celebrities including Chuck Norris and Clint Eastwood, filmed each fighter’s official try-out video.

According to James Jefferson, CEO and Co-Founder of Global Proving Ground, “The first open casting call was a great success. We are happy to announce that additional casting calls will be held in various locations around the globe. During the open casting calls elite combat sports athletes will be filmed by experienced producers, ensuring that each fighter’s reality show try out video is of the highest quality.”

During each open casting call, reality show hopefuls will be required to demonstrate their fighting skills and tell the world why fight fans should vote them onto the show. Fan votes will determine the final cast for this very exciting Hollywood TV project!

Jefferson had this to add, “Fighters that can’t make it out to one of our open casting calls will still have a chance to make it on the show. Fighters will have the opportunity to submit a reality show try-out video through Global Proving Ground (GPG), a new revolutionary platform where fighters of all disciplines can showcase their skills to promoters, match-makers, sponsors and producers. Full details on GPG will be announced this week, so stay tuned!”

ALL experienced fighters with a combat sports background are encouraged to try out for the reality show. The show’s creator is seeking elite fighters from all over the world. Fighters of all disciplines are welcome; MMA, Kung Fu, Jiu-Jitsu, Karate, Muay Thai, Boxing, K-1 and many others.

The casting call in Myrtle Beach will take place this Thursday, July 26, 2012 at Carolina Forest Martial Arts in the Forest Crossing Shopping Center (4999 Carolina Forest Blvd. Unit-15.) Filming of reality show hopefuls will take place from 10am to 3pm and from 6:30pm to 9:30pm. Training gear will be available for fighter use during filming. Coaches are welcome to attend.

“I have such a passion for training…” Stephanie Alba Interview by: sPidA

sPidA: You’ll be competing in your 2nd MMA bout come April 14th,what did you learn from your debut in Mixed Martial Arts?

Stephanie: I learned soooo much from that fight. I mostly learned that in MMA you can not be one dimensional but well rounded. I think I’m becoming more well rounded.

sPidA: You’ve stayed active in Grappling Tournaments ,would you say your strong point would be your grappling?

Stephanie: Yes, its definitely what I love to do. Its like a chess match on the ground. Being a smaller chick its fun to be able to hold bigger guys down or be able to make space, reverse position and tap them out despite the weight difference.

sPidA : With all due respect to your gym Urban Jungle, have you crossed trained any to prepare you for your upcoming bout at the Legacy Amateur event come April 14th?

Stephanie: Yes! I’ve actually worked with some great coaches from 4 oz fight club. Jeremy and Bob push me in different ways. Those guys have a passion for fighting and I love how welcome they have made me feel. I think its smart to have other coaches helping out and giving me pointers and also being able to spar with other females. I’ve worked with some other great female fighters like Jennifer Scott and Kristy Kester over at 4 oz. I recently started working with my old boxing coach Aaron Pena from Gracie Barra, but Urban Jungle is my home gym. Tony and Michelle are definitely the ones who have inspired me to become a personal trainer and a fighter.

sPidA : Working as a personal trainer, is it easier to stay motivated before any of your competitions?

Stephanie: I think so.I basically live in the gym. My co-workers are so supportive of my training. Everyone I work with is always giving me advice as to what I should be eating, how I should be training and also when I need to rest and recover. They also help passively stretch me out so that’s always nice.

sPidA: What athletes in Mixed Martial Arts/Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu do you look up to for motivation, any that you would like to train with?

Stephanie: Marc Ramirez one of my teammates at Urban Jungle who is someone I look up to. He helps keep me motivated and when we hang out its mostly talking about fighting and training. Recently another fighter Justin Rieswerg whom I got to hang out with during his last fight camp, taught me a thing or two about fighting and nutrition. All the women I went to fight camp with last July in Vegas G2 seeing what they are all doing really helps motivate me. I got to train with Carla Esparza and she has become one of my favorite fighters and I sooooo love her style. I would love to train with her again.

sPidA: What are some of your goals outside of Mixed Martial Arts / Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Stephanie: Some of my goals are to finish school and open up my own Self defense gym that is geared toward women and children. I have such a passion for training and helping people out and changing lives for the better,

sPidA: You seemed to have really kept a strict diet to make weight, what will your first meal be after your bout come April 14th?

Stephanie: I have been sticking to a very strict diet. I’ve never had to diet before so its been tough since I love food but the thing I really want to have is a burger and a beer! =9

sPidA: With promotions like “Girls in Gi” making a wave for women in the sport of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, how much easier is it getting to cross train and meet other women that share the passion Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Stephanie: It is so much easier to train with women now. When I first started there were no women in my weight class at BJJ competitions. It was mostly guys. I’m so grateful that the sport is growing and we are now able to have such training available such as Girls in Gis. Its so different training with women than men. Our bodies just move differently. Makes it nice.

sPidA: Are your parents very supportive of what your doing both in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/Mixed Martial Arts? How do they feel about your choices in combat sports?

Stephanie: My parents are sooooo supportive of my training. They thinks its cool since I have such a passion for the sport. My dad likes watching MMA so its cool and brags about me to his friends. My grandfather was actually a pro boxer waaay back in the day so no wonder I like it. My mom wants to come to my fight but I don’t think I’m gonna let her. I think it would be too stressful.
