Taking Your Game to the Next Level – Nomad

I wanted to start the New Year off by talking about how Strength, Conditioning, and Nutrition play a vital role in mixed martial arts (MMA). Often times we see fighters, both amateur and pro; run out of energy in the cage. Good energy levels from bell to bell play an important role when it comes to whose hand is raised at the end of the fight. I’m sure many of you have seen a fighter come out for Round One with high energy, however; by Round Two or Three become sluggish and unable to defend themselves and ultimately loose the fight.

Fighters must find the right balance in their training and in their fight. Fighters should understand that strength, conditioning, and nutrition are also part of a successful game.

Joel Jamieson, founder of 8weeksout.com, is one of MMA’s top Strength & Conditioning Coaches and pioneers and is widely regarded as the nation’s leading expert in the science of physical conditioning for MMA. In one of Joel’s articles titled “Ultimate Fight Conditioning – Push the Pace” he writes “regardless of a fighter’s weight class, every cell in their body needs a constant supply of energy to function. This includes the cells within muscle fibers, of course, and they need energy in order to do their job of contracting and producing the force it takes to throw strikes, go for and defend takedowns, attempt a submission, etc.”

He goes on to say “Dynamic sports like MMA that require an athlete to produce a ton of energy to support high levels of muscle force and power for up to 15-25 minutes no doubt rely on both aerobic and anaerobic energy production – there is simply no way that either system alone is capable of producing enough energy by itself. This fact is generally well known and accepted, but what’s often misunderstood, however, is just how important the balance between these two energy systems really is.”

He then breaks it down to three major components, developing your cardiovascular system to deliver as much oxygen to the working muscles as possible, training the muscles to become more efficient at using the oxygen that your cardiovascular system is able to deliver and finally incorporating a training method called pace work. For combat sports, this type of work should take the form of sparring or pad/work and the general guideline is simply to deliberately train at the maximum pace you can sustain without any real measure of fatigue.

Right here in Texas we have great strength, conditioning, and nutrition personal trainers who are making a difference for Texas fighters. The Muscle Factory, of San Antonio, is one of those training facilities. Roland Gonzalez, Owner and Head Trainer, of the Muscle Factory has been helping amateur and pro MMA fighters for years. While at the Muscle Factory I was able to watch Roland put Ray “The Judge” Rodriguez, a pro mma fighter out of San Antonio, though one of his two hour work out. Wow….it was high paced! I was impressed with Roland’s personal attention to detail and motivation during Ray’s work out.

After his workout, Ray told me “Training at the Muscle Factory has made me a complete fighter. My size, strength, stamina, and speed have all improved greatly.” Ray also said “Roland Gonzalez is amazing at what he does, and is one of the most genuine people I have ever met in my life. He’s been at every weigh in and been able to help me put back on 15 to 20 pounds before my fight time.”

Open Casting Call to be Held for Combat Sports Athletes in Myrtle Beach for Reality Show [Press Release]

PRESS RELEASE: July 23, 2012

Myrtle Beach, SC – Global Proving Ground (GPG), a new revolutionary platform that enables combat sports athletes to showcase their skills on a global level, announced today that additional casting calls will be held both in the U.S. and abroad for the GPG related reality show project. All experienced fighters with a combat sports background are welcome. The next open casting call will take place in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on July 26, at Carolina Forest Martial Arts.

The first open casting call for this exciting reality show project, hosted by the MMA & Sports Expo ‘Show of Strength’ in Atlantic City, exceeded the creator’s expectations. The casting call drew many elite fighters from a variety of martial arts backgrounds. Hollywood producer/director Ben Perry, who has worked with many A-list celebrities including Chuck Norris and Clint Eastwood, filmed each fighter’s official try-out video.

According to James Jefferson, CEO and Co-Founder of Global Proving Ground, “The first open casting call was a great success. We are happy to announce that additional casting calls will be held in various locations around the globe. During the open casting calls elite combat sports athletes will be filmed by experienced producers, ensuring that each fighter’s reality show try out video is of the highest quality.”

During each open casting call, reality show hopefuls will be required to demonstrate their fighting skills and tell the world why fight fans should vote them onto the show. Fan votes will determine the final cast for this very exciting Hollywood TV project!

Jefferson had this to add, “Fighters that can’t make it out to one of our open casting calls will still have a chance to make it on the show. Fighters will have the opportunity to submit a reality show try-out video through Global Proving Ground (GPG), a new revolutionary platform where fighters of all disciplines can showcase their skills to promoters, match-makers, sponsors and producers. Full details on GPG will be announced this week, so stay tuned!”

ALL experienced fighters with a combat sports background are encouraged to try out for the reality show. The show’s creator is seeking elite fighters from all over the world. Fighters of all disciplines are welcome; MMA, Kung Fu, Jiu-Jitsu, Karate, Muay Thai, Boxing, K-1 and many others.

The casting call in Myrtle Beach will take place this Thursday, July 26, 2012 at Carolina Forest Martial Arts in the Forest Crossing Shopping Center (4999 Carolina Forest Blvd. Unit-15.) Filming of reality show hopefuls will take place from 10am to 3pm and from 6:30pm to 9:30pm. Training gear will be available for fighter use during filming. Coaches are welcome to attend.

Jessica Prado Interview: Bound PCG May 19th. By: Guy Potter

Jessica Prado fighting out of Laredo, TX and representing LAREDO MMA will be making her Mixed Martial Arts debut on May 19th in San Antonio, TX. This will be for Premiere Combat Group amateur Mixed Martial Arts promotion. Let’s get started!

Guy: How did you first get introduced to Mixed Martial Arts?

Prado: I got introduced about 2yrs ago by a fellow teammate.

Guy: Since that day, was fighting/competing in Mixed Martial Arts ever an option?

Prado: Yes, Ive always looked forward to fighting. Especially that I’m the only girl training in my team, n seeing the guys compete .. i would tell myself  ” I want sum of that ” . LoL

Guy:Being a parent yourself, how safe is the sport of Mixed Martial Arts?

Prado: Being a parent of two girls gets me thinking about there safety as far as the sport goes, but with the proper coaches and techniques. It really is as safe as you allow it to be. And especially them being girls, a great way of self defense.

Guy: You have been involved in sports growing up, how does training in Mixed Martial Arts compare to anything else you’ve trained in?

Prado: Yes, I have always been an athlete in different sports, and Mix Martial Arts relates mainly the conditioning and strength.

Guy: Working a 9-5 job , do your co workers know about you making a debut in MMA come May 19th, how did they react when they first heard?

Prado: Yes My Co-Workers are aware of my Debut in May 19 and I’m looking forward to having there support that night . I have to admit they were excited that i was finally getting this opportunity.

Guy: How often do you train, has this picked up since agreeing to fight?

Prado: I Have My two a days.. wake up at 5am for my cardio/conditioning and later after work head to the gym around 4pm for my afternoon training, starts off with my cardio and them for sum hard work w the guys. yes it has picked up, with the am training and my early cardio before classes start and then in the evening to finish it off with more cardio.

Guy: Do you know anything about your opponent, how will you deal with nerves once stepping inside the Cage?

Prado: I hate to say that no i don’t know anything bout my opponent except her name. and well nerves come and go, but once stepping into that cage i plan to give her war 🙂

Guy:  Walk out music, what are you thinking and why?

Prado: My walk out song is Itty Bitty by Ms. Nikki Minaj and well its self explanatory 🙂

Guy: You have a great team at LAREDO MMA , How much support are you getting from the team?

Prado: Yes I sure do Have a Great Team With Laredo MMA, and well i am proud to say i get there 110% support .

Guy: What style of fighting do you like and is there any fighters you look up to?

Prado: The only fighter style i look up to is my very own Coach Sonny “El Loco”  Luque Trad,  with a great stand up.
