Is The Hourglass Running Out on Randy Couture?

Mike Chiappettaby Mike Chiappetta

Every time the hourglass seems to be running out of sand, Randy Couture flips it over and starts fresh.

At 46, Couture is one of the world’s oldest active mixed martial artists, and aside from the recently debuting Herschel Walker, the oldest to fight for a major organization. Without question, he is the most decorated MMA fighter in his age group, but that’s not a distinction he particularly cares for. To him, it’s simple: either he’s capable of competing with the very best in the world, or he’s not.

Want evidence? Just ask the man who’s preparing to face Mark Coleman at Saturday’s UFC 109 about his interest level in fighting the winner of the upcoming Lyoto Machida vs. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua light-heavyweight title fight.

Hector Lombard isn’t content being the Bellator middleweight champion. In fact, when MMA Fighting spoke to Lombard last week at American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Fla., he said that he was frustrated with the lack of respect and attention he receives from other fighters and promoters. So, Lombard has begun calling out some of the top fighters in the world, and he has made it clear that he wants Bellator to sign former WEC champion Paulo Filho. He has also let it be known that he would like a shot at Dan Henderson.

Lombard, who will compete on the G-Force Fights 3 card against Joey Gorczynski this weekend, also talked about being a leader at ATT and training with Kimbo Slice. Check out the video interview below.

Paulo Thiago May Have Easier Job in The Cage Than Out

Mike Chiappettaby Mike Chiappetta

As mixed martial arts continues to grow, the number of top-level fighters holding full-time jobs while competing shrinks.

One fighter, however, who is bucking the trend and continues to hold on to his employment away from the cage is Paulo Thiago, and his job is a doozy.

The 29-year-old Thiago, who faces Mike Swick in one of the featured bouts of Saturday’s UFC 109, is a member of BOPE, an elite special forces unit based in his hometown of Brasilia, Brazil. In his role, Thiago takes part in hostage rescues, bomb diffusions, gun seizures and drug busts, among other dangerous tasks.

Jose Canseco has never been one to miss a chance to take a shortcut or get his name in the news, so it should come to little surprise to anyone when the self-admitted juicer seized upon someone else’s success in an attempt to steal the spotlight for himself.

His latest target: Herschel Walker.

Writing on his Twitter account, which amazingly has over 320,000 followers, Canseco wrote, “I guess I may have to show Herschel Walker who the real bad Boy of the Sports industry is. If the powers that be are reading, I want in.”

‘King’ Muhammed Lawal Responds to Gegard Mousasi, Critics

Ariel Helwaniby Ariel Helwani

When MMA Fighting recently spoke to Gegard Mousasi about a potential matchup against Muhammed Lawal, the Strikeforce light heavyweight champion said that he hasn’t been all that impressed with Lawal’s skills. MMA Fighting later gave Lawal a chance to respond to Mousasi and his critics, who have said that he hasn’t accomplished enough in his young career to deserve a shot at Mousasi.

Midway through the interview, Lawal’s friend and future training partner, Paul Daley, also stopped by to offer his two cents on the fight and officially announce that he was one of the newest members of Team Get Dat Paper. Check out the video interview below.

MMA Top 10 Welterweights: Nick Diaz Proves He’s for Real

Michael David Smithby Michael David Smith

Nick DiazNick Diaz finally returned to his natural weight class of 170 pounds on Saturday night at Strikeforce Miami, and he put on a show. Diaz easily dominated Dream welterweight champion Marius Zaromskis, winning the Strikeforce welterweight belt and showing that he’s one of the best in the world at his weight class.

In fact, I think he’s the one welterweight in all of MMA who would give Georges St. Pierre a real run for his money. Unfortunately, as long as Diaz is in Strikeforce and GSP is in the UFC, we won’t get to see that match-up. But as you’ll see in my rankings of the top 10 welterweights below, Diaz is in elite territory.
